Long day

Posted by afhouston at 01:12 AM on January 30, 2004.

This has been one of the longest day's I've had in a while.

Brutal. I told myself this semester was going to be brutal and I didn't believe it. Boy was I wrong.

I still need to work in LSAT practice. It's getting harder to disinvolve myself than I thought.

URJ, etc

Posted by afhouston at 02:03 AM on January 23, 2004.

So, the URJ submissions have been coming in, thankfully, and we should have enough articles to select from. I realized over time, that our best chance to get submissions is not through large impersonal e-mails, but through frequent, personal contact.

I also need to stop writing e-mails that start "Thank you for submitting to the URJ" because it sounds like I'm enslaving the authors.

Radio killed the videostar

Posted by afhouston at 02:31 PM on January 18, 2004.

I can't find the music video for "Video killed the Radiostar". I heard its pretty bad to look at, but probably very cool in those days.

Anyone that's wondering, I'm applying to law school, it's not a secret and I'm prepping for the LSAT. I don't want to distract myself too much, but I will probably take the GRE, GMAT and foreign service exams as well.

I'm disinvolving myself from activities as quickly as possible. I can't commit the 10 to 15hrs a week of working on extracurricular activities. A lot of time goes into answering e-mails and just thinking of ideas, and of course there are meetings and events to attend.

I need to go to HEB to go buy groceries for my open door night tonight.

Ahsan and I cleaned our room, it looks pretty nice. I am attaching photos.

back to school

Posted by afhouston at 03:20 AM on January 14, 2004.

Welcome to 2004...

I graduate 2005.

I'm back in school and at the moment, in RA "training", which is better than fall training, but seems designed to occupy our time. A lot of people don't have anything else to do.

I'm practicing for the LSAT, my personal goal is to devote 10hrs a week to it. I've seen some improvement, but what I need to overcome is impatience and trying to stay focused and maintain concentration because if you start wandering even for a minute, you lose 10-15 points off your final score. My scores are now in the 160-165 range. I hope to see some improvement in the coming months. I'll probably make the decision to take a class in late February.

While I'm practicing for the LSAT, I might as well make it a program. That way I get credit for something I'm already doing. If I can create a regular excercise schedule, I might make that a program for my floor as well.

I've changed my diet. I find it to be a challenge to resist the new sprinkle krispy kreme doughnuts. I could avoid them last semester, but the color of the sprinkles is making things more difficult. I eat oatmeal for every breakfast. I tried a baked apple version of quaker oats and I hated it. I think I'll stick to plain oatmeal from here on out.

I got a haircut, it feels nice. The weather is warmer than it was in previous days. I can walk in a T-shirt and pants sans jacket. I need to wash my jacket, actually, I need to do laundry in general.

The stockmarket has been pretty unpredictable lately. A lot of well known stocks are valued right or over-valued and I can't see any blue chips selling at reasonable prices. Microsoft seems attractive, but everyone else says tech had its run in 2003 and I should be focusing on energy and industrial stocks, like GE and so on. I still don't have the stomach to evaluate the small cap stocks because I don't have that kind of research experience to make sound decisions. Even if I put my money in GE or some stock like that, it wouldn't really go anywhere. It can be good and bad, but I'm not looking to make a lot. I would be very happy if I could play the market and get $500 in 3 months time.

There's been a lot of Dean bashing. It appears to be orchestrated very well. It's kind of snowballed on the guy. I don't remember people being this critical to GWB when he was running. I feel for the guy. I'm probably voting Dean.

I could be precint chair, there seems not to be one in the University area for democrats. I don't know what I could really do though. It seems for a lot of these positions, a car would be useful. I am planning on getting a bike this semester. Hopefully someone can take me to buy one this week.

I have to sleep now. I just realized training starts at 8:30am.

Hope everyone who isn't here yet enjoys their break. Happy New Year!

more stuff on the S

Posted by afhouston at 01:25 AM on December 17, 2003.

from Motley Fool report...
"Economists have been calling for holiday sales to rise 5%-7% over last year, which was one of the weakest shopping seasons in decades. So far, though, it's been touch and go for retailers, as early winter storms have blanketed parts of the country with snow for two weekends in a row.

The news of Saddam Hussein's capture prompted some analysts to predict that consumer confidence and spending will go up as a result. Holiday shoppers may be happy that the dictator's in American hands, but whether that will actually translate into spending more cash (Yay, we captured a war criminal! Let's buy more toys for the kids!) remains to be seen."
